The Rochester International Jazz Festival Starts Friday, June 8

News Get Ready Rochester! The Rochester International Jazz Festival Starts Friday June 8 -- Legendary Performers! Hottest Emerging Artists! International Soul!

Rochester, NY --June 7, 2007--The 6th Edition of the Rochester International Jazz Festival (RIJF), one of the nation's fastest growing music festivals, starts Friday June 8. For nine big days, June 8-16, music fans can enjoy an amazing menu of the world's finest improvised music as more than 600 musicians perform in 220 plus concerts.

Festival Series
The Festival is presented in four series at 18 venues in and around the East End Cultural District in Downtown Rochester: Senator Jim Alesi Eastman Theatre Headliner Series, Club Pass Series of 120 concerts presented by Lacy Katzen LLP, 46 free concerts on City of Rochester outdoor stages and 14 free concerts and films in the Museums & Gallery Series.

Not to Miss Highlights!
Tonight! Thursday June 7, WXXI TV Jazz Festival Programs, 8 p.m. - Catch five acts from last year's Rochester International Jazz Festival on WXXI-TV and WXXI-HD. Produced by WXXI and airing on PBS stations across the country, the five half hour episodes, which will run back to back, feature performances by Karrin Allyson, Mose Allison, Cedar Walton, the Charlie Hunter Trio and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. WXXI will be back again at the 2007 Festival producing shows from concerts at Kilbourn Hall with Geri Allen, Harry Allen, Christian Scott, James Moody, Don Byron, and Bill Frisell, all performing at Kilbourn Hall.

Friday June 8, 4 p.m. - AfriKuumba Dance and Drum, performing on Jazz Street in the Toyota Performance area, Free! Founded in 2003 by Artistic Director, Professor Karen Martino, and Musical Director, Harold Akyeampong, AfriKuumba works to promote the democratic principle of "Unity through Diversity" and the Akan notion of "Agromma," meaning children who dance and play together are children of love. AfriKuumba strives to cultivate active citizenship, individual expression, and critical awareness in its young participants.

Toyota Hybrid Vehicles - June 8-16, Toyota, official vehicle of the Rochester International Jazz Festival, will present its new hybrid lineup, the Camry, Prius and Highlander at the Festival. See the vehicles on display and talk to representatives at the corner of Jazz Street and East Main Street. Presented by your local Toyota dealers.

Hear the Best of Local Young Talent Perform in 18 Regional High School Bands June 8-16 Hear the stars of tomorrow as the area's top jazz bands perform live on the City of Rochester Jazz Street Stage Presented by The Community Foundation. All concerts free! From 4:30 p.m. daily. See rochesterjazz.com and brochure for schedule. High school bands represented are: Greece Odyssey, Brighton, Brockport, Newark, Webster Thomas, Kendall, Penfield, Greece Athena, Gates-Chili, Spencerport, West-Irondequoit, Hilton, Webster Schroeder, Pittsford Sutherland, Fairport, Greece Olympia, and School of the Arts.

Tickets
- Eastman Theatre shows are $27.50 - $80 plus service charge, available at rochesterjazz.com, ticketmaster.com, Jazz Fest Ticket Shop at 100 East Ave. and at the door.
- Individual Club Concerts, $20-25 per person, buy tickets at the door at all Club Venues, cash only, no reserved seating or advance ticket sales. Shows frequently sell out so arrive early. First come-first served!
- Club Pass, sold out, no longer available. Individual tickets available at the door for all Club Shows. $25 for Kilbourn Hall showsl, $20 for all other Club Venues.

Merchandise
Buy Official Festival Gear in the Merchandise Tent located on Jazz Street, open daily from 5 - 11 p.m. Purchase a variety of T-shirts, hats, berets, polo shirts, jackets, umbrellas, this year's official posters and tote bags. Prices range from $15-33. There will also be items for sale from past festivals in the vintage merchandise booth opposite the main merchandise booth.

2007 Limited Edition Official Poster
This colorful limited edition cubist-like poster created by well-known Rochester-based illustrator David Cowles features many of the festivalˇ¦s headliners set amidst familiar venues including Eastman Theatre, Crowne Plaza and Max of Eastman Place. Cowles also created official posters for the Festival in 2003 and 2004. The poster is for sale at the Festival's Merchandise Tent on Jazz Street for $15 unframed, $30 Plak-it.

CD Sales and Artist Autographs
CDs of many Festival artists will be available for sale at the Bop Shop in the Merchandise Tent on Jazz Street. Many artists will be signing CDs in the Merchandise Tent in the Toyota Signing Area following their concerts. Announcements will be made periodically throughout the festival.

Get Programs & Brochures
Information, programs, and brochures can be picked up at the Ticket Office, open daily 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 100 East Ave. at the corner of Gibbs and East Avenue in the heart of the Festival.

Nightly Jam Sessions - Jazz Never Sleeps!
For late night Jam Sessions don't miss the State St. Bar & Grille in the Crowne Plaza, official hotel of the Rochester International Jazz Festival. You never know who will stop by to play! Sessions start at 10:30 p.m. and run through 2:30 p.m. Free!
